Butuan city: A 19-year-old former member of the Militia ng Bayan, affiliated with the New People's Army (NPA), voluntarily surrendered to the Butuan City Police Office (BCPO). The surrender took place on Saturday, as confirmed by the local police authorities. The individual, whose identity has been kept confidential, is a resident of Purok 5, Barangay Pianing in Butuan City.
According to Philippines News Agency, the surrender involved the handover of a Colt M4 caliber 5.56 rifle, along with a short magazine containing five live rounds of ammunition. The former militia member was part of the Sub-Regional Sentro De Grabidad, Sub-Regional Committee Westland, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA.
During an interview with the authorities, the surrenderer disclosed his previous role as a public information officer within the organizing group of the rebel movement in the area. The BCPO emphasized that the surrender reflects trust in government programs aimed at assisting former rebels in reintegrating into society and promoting peace and development in communities.
The BCPO, along with various stakeholders, continues to encourage remaining rebels in the city to lay down their arms and participate in government programs and services. The former rebel was received by BCPO chief Col. Richie Yatar and members of the Butuan City Mobile Force Company.
