Iloilo city: Authorities on Friday said security and traffic measures are in place for the expected 15,000 and 18,000 devotees and pilgrims for the annual religious feast of Nuestra Se±ora de la Candelaria, patroness of Western Visayas, in Jaro district here on Feb. 2.
According to Philippines News Agency, Public Order and Safety Management Office (POSMO) and Traffic and Transportation Management Office (TTMO) head Uldarico Garbanzos highlighted the challenges as the religious feast coincides with the anniversary celebration of 'Ang Dios Gugma.' He noted that significant traffic impact is anticipated around Jaro plaza.
Upon the request of the Association of Barangay Captains in the district, Garbanzos announced plans for whole-day road closures from early morning until 8 p.m. to accommodate the events. The religious procession will commence in front of the Jaro Cathedral, proceeding through various streets before returning to the cathedral.
Garbanzos detailed that adjacent streets, including Jalandoni, connecting streets in Commission Civil and Lopez Jaena, will be closed along the parade route. Full closure will be implemented in the inner ring at the Jaro plaza area. However, emergency vehicles, essential utilities, deliveries, and those with VIP car passes will have access.
Public utility vehicles from Ungka heading to the city will be rerouted through Cabangbang and Arguelles extension towards Cuartero, while those from Tabuc Suba will use Quintin Salas towards Ungka and Benigno Aquino Avenue.
Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) Deputy City Director for Administration, Lt. Col. Lindley Barrientos, stated that 149 personnel will be deployed to enhance the security preparations of the Iloilo City Police Station 9. These personnel will manage area security, traffic, and serve as covert operatives among the public participating in the celebration.
The ICPO will also set up pedestrian screening areas and police assistance desks to address public concerns during the event.
