12 Bulacan Officials Stranded in Dubai Amid Mid-East Conflict

Dubai:<Text>

Twelve local officials from Bulacan are stranded in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. During the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed that the officials, comprising one mayor and 11 vice mayors, departed the country on February 25.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla stated that the vice mayors traveled in a personal capacity, as indicated in their application for travel authority, which allowed for their departure as long as no government funds were used. However, there is uncertainty regarding the mayor's travel authority, which Remulla mentioned is still under verification.

The stranded officials have not yet formally requested assistance from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The escalation of tensions in the Middle East occurred in late February, following a major military operation launched by the United States and Israel ag ainst Iran. In response, Iran fired drones and missiles toward Israel and targeted US military facilities in certain areas of the region.

With approximately 2.5 million Filipinos residing in the Middle East, at least 1,400 have reportedly expressed a desire for repatriation amid the ongoing air strikes. The Department of Migrant Workers has stated there is currently no mass repatriation, but has assured assistance to affected Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Remulla confirmed that the DILG is prepared to assist in the possible repatriation efforts for OFWs.
