11 Electric Coops Experience Power Interruption Due to Typhoon Nando

Manila: Eleven electric cooperatives are facing power disruptions as Super Typhoon Nando, internationally known as Ragasa, continues to impact the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, two electric cooperatives in Northern Luzon, specifically the Abra Electric Cooperative (ABRECO) and the Batanes Electric Cooperative Inc. (BATANELCO), have encountered total power interruption. These areas are currently under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 to 4, as per the 8 p.m. report from the weather bureau.

Power supply to ABRECO was disrupted when the San Esteban-Bangued 69kV Line became unavailable at 11:39 a.m. Monday. Meanwhile, nine other electric cooperatives are experiencing partial power interruptions. These include the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC), La Union Electric Cooperative (LUELCO), and Pangasinan Electric Cooperative III (PANELCO III) in the Ilocos Region. In the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO), Ifugao Electric Cooperative (IFELCO), and Mountain Province Electric Cooperative (MOPRECO) are affected. Additionally, the Cagayan Electric Cooperative I (CAGELCO 1), CAGELCO II in Cagayan Valley, and Batangas Electric Cooperative II (BATELEC II) in Calabarzon are also experiencing issues.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that CAGELCO II is impacted by the unavailability of the Lal-lo-Sta. Ana 69kV Line, which went offline at around 9:25 a.m. Monday, and the Magapit-Camalaniugan 69kV Line, which became unavailable at around 3:21 p.m. Citing a report from the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the inter-agency Task Force on Energy Resiliency, led by the Department of Energy (DOE), stated that 41 electric cooperatives in 27 provinces are currently under monitoring due to the effects of Typhoon Nando and the southwest monsoon.

TCWS signals have been raised from Northern to Southern Luzon, with Signal No. 4 issued for Babuyan Islands, the northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan, and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte. Signal No. 3 covers Batanes, the northern and central portions of mainland Cagayan, northern and central Apayao, and the rest of Ilocos Norte. Signal No. 2 is in effect over the rest of mainland Cagayan, northern part of Isabela, the rest of Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, northern portion of Benguet, and northern portion of La Union. Signal No. 1 has been issued for the rest of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, the rest of Benguet, the rest of La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Zambales, and the northern portion of Quezon province.
