Bolinao: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported a total of 104 earthquakes occurring from May 27 to June 3 this year, with epicenters located offshore of Bolinao, Pangasinan. The quakes have varied in magnitude from 1.9 to 4.4, according to April Grace Caluya Pagud of the Bolinao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office's Research and Planning Section.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pagud stated that while most of the earthquakes have been weak and not felt on land, monitoring continues due to the epicenter's location within parts of the Manila Trench, approximately 100 kilometers west of Bolinao. 'Although, most of the earthquakes are weak and were not felt in the land area, we continue to monitor because its epicenter is within the parts of Manila Trench,' she noted.
Pagud emphasized that the local authorities are in constant communication with Phivolcs to gather more information and obtain the agency's official assessment. She explained that such seismic activities are not uncommon in tectonically active areas like the Manila Trench and currently show no signs of leading to a larger or imminent earthquake.
Furthermore, the local government of Bolinao is actively implementing preparedness measures. These include conducting earthquake drills and ensuring continuous coordination with communities through 24-7 monitoring of their emergency operations center. Information dissemination is carried out via their Facebook page, barangay assemblies, and regular updates to their contingency plans.
Residents are encouraged to prepare emergency go-bags and increase their awareness of the location and proximity of the nearest evacuation centers, ensuring readiness in the event of an emergency.
