Sarangani: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Thursday that the death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Maasim, Sarangani, and surrounding provinces has increased to 78. This figure is 10 more than the previously released numbers on June 16.
According to Philippines News Agency, the disaster response agency provided a detailed breakdown of these fatalities, with 21 occurring in the Davao Region and 57 in Soccsksargen. Additionally, the number of individuals reported missing stands at 30, with 13 in the Davao Region and 17 in Soccsksargen. The number of injured remains unchanged at 1,339.
The earthquake has affected 346,413 families, equivalent to 1,414,752 individuals, across 573 barangays in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The NDRRMC has stated that all casualty figures are still subject to verification or confirmation.
In terms of infrastructure, the earthquake has resulted in damage to 74,667 houses in the regions of Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and the BARMM. In response to the calamity, 14 cities and municipalities have declared a state of calamity, with five located in the Davao Region and nine in Soccsksargen.
