US Peace Corps volunteers may return by September

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) expects the reentry of United States Peace Corps volunteers in September.

US Peace Corps country director Jenner Edelman will pay a courtesy call on DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista via video conference on Wednesday.

“With this courtesy call, the reinforcement and reentry of limited number of two-year and short-term Peace Corps Response Volunteers in the Philippines is targeted in September 2021,” the DSWD said in a statement on Monday.

For 18 years, volunteers of the Peace Corps have been deployed to DSWD residential and non-residential care facilities, social welfare agencies, and non-government organizations across the Philippines.

“These volunteers have played essential roles as mentors, tutors, co-facilitators, advisors, and coaches in basic literacy, life skills training, livelihood skills training, and staff development,” the agency said.

The voluntary activities were halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the virtual meet, Bautista will seek to strengthen DSWD’s convergence with the Peace Corps in serving and providing inclusive services and programs for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized families and communities.

“The DSWD and the US Peace Corps have both continued to remain true to their collaborative efforts to provide support to at-risk individuals and communities and to promote human development,” the agency said.
