Pandemic-affected residents in Siargao get financial aid

Residents and local farmers from the different towns of Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte received financial aid from the government through the programs and services of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 13 (Caraga).

Under the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) Livelihood Assistance Grant (LAG) of the DSWD, about 426 families from the towns of San Benito, Sta. Monica, and Gen. Luna were provided with a total of PHP5.25 million in financial assistance on Friday.

“These families have lost their livelihood and other sources of income due to the pandemic,” DSWD-13 Information Officer Marko Davey Reyes told the Philippine News Agency on Saturday.

Reyes said of the total number of families granted financial aid, 109 were from San Benito, 148 from Sta. Monica, and 169 from Gen. Luna.

Financial grants ranging from PHP10,000 to PHP15,000 were provided to the affected families during a series of distribution activities in Siargao Island, he said.

“Farmers who are affected by the pandemic in the town of Burgos also received cash assistance through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program of the DSWD,” Reyes said, referring to 100 farmers who received a total of PHP300,000 in AICS assistance.

The distribution of the financial assistance was led by DSWD Assistant Secretary Victor Juan H. Neri, Secretary Martin M. Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, and DSWD-13 Director Ramel F. Jamen.
