‘Habagat’ causes P155-M infra, agri damage to Bulacan

More than PHP155 million worth of infrastructures and crops in Bulacan province were destroyed after more than two weeks of “habagat” (southwest monsoon) rains enhanced by Typhoon Fabian.

Based on the latest report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), agriculture incurred about PHP90.14 million in losses while damage to infrastructures was initially reported at PHP65.25 million.

Agricultural losses covered rice, corn, high-value crops, fish, and livestock.

The fishery sector took the biggest hit with losses running into PHP53.41 million, followed by the rice sector at PHP20.64 million, high-value crops at PHP15.79 million, livestock at PHP294,800, and corn PHP5,214.

A total of 1,350 farmers and 471 fishermen were affected by floods.

Damage to infrastructures was placed at PHP62.05 million in road sections and PHP3.2 million in provincial government buildings.

PDRRMO chief Felicisima Mungcal said on Saturday the flooding was aggravated by high tide that hit 106 low-lying villages in five towns and a city.

Of the total flood-hit villages, Mungcal said 29 were in Malolos City, 22 in Calumpit, 19 in Bocaue, 18 in Hagonoy, 15 in Paombong, and three in Guiguinto.

Calumpit is under a state of partial calamity and Malolos is under a state of calamity.

Forty evacuation centers are in use in Bulakan, Calumpit, Paombong, Hagonoy, Pulilan, Bocaue, Guiguinto, Balagtas, and Obando towns and Malolos City for 537 families composed of 1,656 individuals.
