Aftershocks, damage possible from magnitude 5 Biliran quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) updated its earthquake bulletin on Thursday night, saying aftershocks and damage are possible from the magnitude 5 quake that hit Biliran province.

Earlier, Phivolcs said both aftershocks and damage are unlikely from the magnitude 4.9 earthquake. However, it updated the bulletin at 8:07 p.m. and also corrected that it was a magnitude 5 earthquake.

The tectonic quake struck 6 kilometers northwest of the municipality of Biliran around 3:23 p.m. and had a depth of 5 km.

Intensity V was felt in Biliran, Naval, Almeria, and Cabucgayan, Biliran; while intensity IV was reported in Culaba, Caibiran, and Kawayan, Biliran; Calubian and Leyte, Leyte.

Intensity III was recorded in Maripipi, Biliran; Ormoc City; Capoocan, Carigara, Isabel, and Kanaga, Leyte; and intensity II in Palo and Jaro, Leyte; Cebu City; Masbate City.

Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity VI – Naval, Biliran

Intensity III – Carigara, Leyte

Intensity II – Palo and Alangalang

Intensity I – Abuyog, Leyte; Catbalogan City, Samar

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.
