Point Guard Lewis Alfred Tenorio powered Barangay Ginebra’s slim 102-101 win over Phoenix Petroleum on Saturday in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Season 41 Commissioner’s Cup at the Panabo City Gym in Davao Del Norte.

After trailing by a single point near the end of the final quarter, Tenorio scored a go-ahead jumper with 1.2 remaining in the game to seal Ginebra’s back-to-back victory.

Tenorio finished with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting in the field plus nine assists and two steals.

Seven-footer center Greg Slaughter led Ginebra with 28 points and 13 rebounds while Othyus Jeffers posted 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the field in addition to 14 rebounds.

Forward Joe Devance, who got the crucial offensive rebound in the last play, chipped in nine points and six rebounds also for the Gin Kings.

With the win, Ginebra improved its win-loss record to 5-3. Phoenix, on the other hand, dropped to 2-5. The loss was also a hard one for Phoenix Petroleum team owner Dennis Uy because Panabo is Phoenix’s hometown.

“We didn’t play well all night, they played very, very well and they hit big shots,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone during the post-game interview. “I think LA just shuffled his feet on the last shot and he knocked it down. It was a tough shot anyway, no matter what he did.”

The Fuel Masters opened the first quarter blistering hot establishing a 31-17 lead at the end of first period behind the impressive performance of Pinkney and Josh Urbiztondo.

Phoenix sustained its onslaught in the next quarter stretching their advantage to 56-39 at the half. But Ginebra’s never-say-die attitude began to manifest in the second half.

Rookie playmaker Earl Scottie Thompson and guard Solomon Mercado displayed their prowess in Ginebra’s third quarter assault with a 23-10 run. Phoenix’s huge lead vanished and the score was at 70-all with only a few minutes remaining in the third quarter.

But Monfort and Willie Wilson got in the way of the Gin Kings trimming the gap to 80-75.

Ginebra grabbed the lead anew in the payoff period 86-82, with less than seven minutes left after Slaughter and Jeffers scored a basket each. De¬vance, Jeffers and Tenorio delivered big in the remaining minutes to seal the win for the Gin Kings.

Phoenix import Kevin Pinkney scored 24 points and 14 rebounds while Ryan Roose Garcia notched 23 points. Mon¬fort and Josh Urbiztondo contributed 10 points each also for Phoenix.

Meanwhile, Phoenix players JC Intal, RR Garcia, Willy Wilson, Jens Knuttel, Michael Miranda, and team manager Paolo Bu¬gia, representing the PBA, visited 39 children in Davao Boys Town on Friday as part of the league’s outreach program done in partnership with Anako Philippines Corp.
