Suspect in slay of Ombudsman prosecutor killed in gun scuffle

MANILA -- The suspect in the killing of Ombudsman Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Ednacio-Tanyag was killed after a scuffle with his policeman escort on Saturday.

The incident happened at around 10:45 a.m. at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) Building in Camp Karingal, Quezon City.

In its report, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said Angelo C. Avenido Jr. had been processed for file photographs and latent finger prints in preparation for his transfer to the Quezon City Jail scheduled on Saturday morning when he tried to grab the side arm of one of his guards while they were on their way out of the room.

"(Police Officer 2) Ramil Langa together with detainee just went out of the room when detainee suddenly grabbed PO2 Langa's service firearm that resulted to scuffle between the duo. At that instance, the firearm suddenly went off hitting the detainee in the process," the QCPD said in a statement.

On June 5, police personnel arrested Avenido for stabbing Tanyag, who was then 5 months pregnant. (PNA)
