CEBU’s top bowlers Xyrra Cabusas and Gj Buyco of Team-Prima Cebu will take advantage of the school break to prepare for the 14th World Youth Bowling Championships on July 24 to Aug. 3 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Cabusas and Buyco, both students of the University of San Carlos, will be going to Manila on March 29 to train with the rest of the Philippine Youth Team under coaches Jojo Canare and Biboy Rivera.
Cabusas told Sun.Star Cebu that they will be in Manila for two weeks and will return to Cebu on April 18 for summer class.
“Our class resumes on April 18 so we have to come back to Cebu. But I think our coaches will also go to Cebu on the month of May to help us out with the preparation and training,” said Cabucas, a civil engineering student.
Cabusas, 20, and Buyco, 17, earned the right to represent the country after topping their divisions in the Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC) Youth Eliminations in November last year at the Superbowl, Makati Cinema Square. The top four finishers in the boys and girls divisions in the qualifier make the Team Philippines that will be going to Lincoln, Nebraska.
Cabusas, who had her first shot of the World Youth Bowling Championships last 2014 in Hong Kong, will be banking on her experience for this year’s competition.
“For sure it will be a tough battle and we will be facing top caliber players from different countries. My target for myself is to get an average total of 205, I will be very happy if I get that,” said Cabusas. “The whole team and my teammates strive to get a medal on the event. We will try our best to achieve it.”
Cabusas has started her training last January for her second try in the World Youth Bowling Championships.
Buyco, who recently won a silver medal in the boy’s team event in the 16th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong, will be joining his first World Youth Bowling Championships.
Cabusas and Buyco are the only Cebuanos out of the eight players of the Philippine Youth Bowling Team.
