MANILA-- The golden anniversary celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Tuesday (Aug. 8) will be held simultaneously in at least 17 key cities and municipalities in the Philippines and the capital cities of the regional grouping's member states.
Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) program manager, Queng Reyes, in a briefing Saturday, said the three-part program will begin with a grand parade that will start from the south road of Roxas Blvd. and wind its way to Luneta Park and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), where various presentations will be held afterwards.
Based on the MMDA advisory, the Roxas Blvd. south-bound lane will be closed once the parade enters. It would be occupying two lanes, she said.
Reyes said about 520 contingents from the Department of Education (DepEd) will join the street dancers, who will present regional dances.
PETA artistic director, Maribel Legarda, during the same briefing, said spoken word performers will be part of the team who will present traditional and contemporary performances.
Basically, what we're trying to do is to create that sense of rootedness, tradition and at the same time contemporary, she said.
Legarda said 10 pop stars from each of the ASEAN member countries will perform at the concert ground in the Bonifacio Global City (BGD), Taguig City.
She said the shows are scheduled to last for about an hour and 20 minutes.
During the same briefing, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) head for international affairs, Mary Anne Luis, said Christian Bautista will represent the country in the concert.
Other local performers who will join the concert are Up Dharma Down, the Juans, Thyro and Yumi, Baihana, The Nightingales, 6Cyclemind, Franco, the cast of Rak of Aegis, and Itchyworms.
The BGC (event) is really intended for the millennials so that they would also be aware of what is happening, Luis said, adding that the concert will last until 12 midnight.
Luis told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview that tapping young pop stars to be part of the celebrations aims to attract the younger public.
She said these artists were chosen by the respective cultural ministries of the member states.
At about 7 p.m. on the same day, the simultaneous lantern lighting ceremony will be held, spearheaded by the CCP.
