Serna: 3 festivals, 1 stage

AND so the much-anticipated and historic performances in one venue of the three biggest festivals in the Visayas, namely the Ati-Atihan of Aklan, Dinagyang of Iloilo and Sinulog of Cebu (need I tell you that still?), will finally push through on Thursday, April 28, at the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center at 7 p.m.

The date marks the closing ceremonies of 450th anniversaries of the rediscovery (kaplag) of the image of the Child Jesus, the presence of the Augustinian Order in the Philippines and the 50th year of the Santo Niño Church as a minor basilica. The ceremonies started last year.

On the feast day itself, big events are lined up like the unveiling of the commemorative marker, ceremonial planting of a time capsule (memorabilia of the 450 Kaplag will be opened in 2065—the 500th and 100th anniversaries of the three events), performance of the traditional religious Sinulog, the celebration of the mass to be presided by the prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine, the most Rev. Fr. Alejandro Moral, the performance of above-mentioned big festivals and a fireworks display.

If I’m not mistaken, street dancing of the three festivals dedicated to the Holy Child will also be held in the vicinity of the basilica.

This is another big celebration hosted by Cebu that should not be missed by devotees of the Santo Niño and the Catholic believers in general.

Aside from the aforementioned activities, two other activities are ongoing in two separate venues: the second Kristo Niño exhibition, which will run until April 30 at the Art Center of SM City Cebu, and the 450 Kaplag Photo Exhibition, which will run from April 24 to 30 at the Mountain Wing Atrium of SM Seaside City.

Delan L. Robillos said that the Kristo Niño is an offshoot of Kristo Manila, the annual exhibition that gives viewers a chance to meditate through the visual arts during Lent.

He also said that the first exhibition was born last year when the 450th Kaplag Executive Committee, through its vice chair, executive director and National Commission for the Culture and the Arts Commissioner Rev. Fr. Harold Rentoria, O.S.A., requested the Kristo Manila organizers to mount a similar exhibition in Cebu highlighting the oldest religious relic in the Philippines, the Santo Niño.

Kristo Niño is not only meant to be a venue for the exploration of Christian iconography but also intended to promote the fading tradition of Philippine ecclesiastical art which is a platform for dialog on what it means to be a Catholic Christian and more importantly, what it means to be a Filipino Catholic Christian, Mr. Robillos added.

The theme of the exhibition is: “Sagrada Familia: The Child Christ in the Filipino Family.”

This Monday, dramatic actor and sought-after leading man John Lloyd Cruz will once again meet his fans and followers in a mini-show at SM City Cebu in the afternoon. That is, if there are no last minute changes.

John Lloyd will drum up interest on the latest Star Cinema offering, Just The 3 of Us, in which he co-stars with Jennylyn Mercado. This is the first team-up of the two celebrities.

Despite the announcement of promo diva Josie Pereyra that only John Lloyd will do the promo tour, the Cebu moviegoers are still hoping that at the last minute, Jennylyn will also fly in with the actor. Cross your fingers.

Before I forget, let me greet two friends at Manulife: Carlos Jon Fajardo and Atet Esparraguera, who celebrated their birthdays last Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Wishing you more birthdays to come and more bliss to come your way, Jon and Atet!

For sure, not a few eyebrows were raised both in surprise and envy (especially from the ladies) when young comedy-drama star Kiray Celis was paired off with Derek Ramsay and Kean Cipriano in Love Is Blind, which turned out to be a surprise pre-Valentine hit.

Not content with the unexpected patronage of local moviegoers of the fantasy-comedy-romance movie where Kiray flaunted with confidence her curves in a one-piece bathing suit and had some kissing scenes with Derek, Kiray once more will make the female specie green with envy when she engages in sexy scenes with leading man Enchong Dee in a coming project dubbed I Love You To Death.

Will Kiray eventually give Arci Muñoz stiff competition for the title “the emerging leading lady”? Ang haba talaga ng hair! Haha! Well, who knows?
