MANILAQuezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte on Wednesday called on all registered senior citizens in the city to avail of the local government's free anti-shingles vaccine to protect themselves against the disease and its complications.
Since April 2018, we have recorded nearly 500,000 senior citizens in our city, and many of them are at risk of contracting the shingles virus. This is why we are now calling on all our senior citizens to avail of free anti-shingles vaccines in their respective barangay health centers, Belmonte said in an interview.
We have already coordinated with our Quezon City Health Department and our barangay health centers to provide this service to our elderlies who want to get vaccinated. They can get it anytime, and they will be given just once every three years, Belmonte added.
Shingles or herpes zoster is a viral infection which can manifest as a painful skin rash.
The infection is caused by the varicella zoster virus which is the same virus that causes chicken pox.
It was found that people aged 60 years old and above are most vulnerable to the disease because of their weakened immune system.
This can lead to serious complications such as scarring, hearing problems, loss of sleep, depression, and necrotizing fasciitis.
The Quezon City local government has already allocated the amount of PHP20 million for the funding of the vaccine. (PNA)
