Prices of roses in Bacolod surge ahead of Valentine’s Day

BACOLOD CITY Prices of roses, usually the most in-demand flower during Valentine's Day, have tripled here.

As of Monday afternoon, a stem of rose, which is only PHP25 on regular days, was already sold at PHP80 each at the Bacolod public plaza where least 10 flower stalls are located.

Flower vendor Rubelyn LaAohan said local prices are dictated by the cost of suppliers especially in Dangwa Flower Market in Manila thus, the huge increase.

A bundle of roses now costs PHP850 from only PHP500 on ordinary days.

A bouquet of 12 roses, which can be bought for only PHP400 before, now ranges from PHP1,200 to PHP1,500. A bouquet of three roses is aold at PHP300.

LaAohan suggested to make reservations to avoid the Valentine's Day rush.

There is normally a shortage in supply of roses every February 14, she added.

Reservation is free, and buyers can choose the kind of roses and decorations they want, the vendor said.

Flower vendor Marilou Calonia earlier said there is shortage of flowers during the occasion because of high demand.

By February 13, or a day before the Valentine's Day, the demand starts to increase, peaking on February 14 itself, she added.
