MANILA, Philippines – Phil Younghusband and Tahj Rodney Minniecon struck as Loyola Meralco Sparks FC boosted its quarterfinal bid in the United Football League Cup with a 5-2 drubbing of JP Voltes Tuesday night at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Younghusband fired a hat-trick while Minniecon came through with a brace to lead the Sparks to their second straight win for seven points and into the top spot in Group C.
The Sparks (2-1-0, +10 goal difference) overtook idle Stallion FC, which also carries seven points but with +8 GD. The two, together with third-running JP Voltes (six points), are contesting the two Last-8 berths at stake in the group.
JP Voltes actually jumped the gun on Loyola Meralco with Yugo Kobayashi’s goal off Chihiro Noda’s assist at the 25th minutes.
The Sparks quickly wrested control with Minniecon finishing off Curt Dizon’s delivery at the 36th and following it up with a successful spot-kick five minutes later to go one-up at the half.
