MANILA Anakalusugan party-list and senatorial bet Dr. Willie Ong on Thursday joined forces for the May 13 mid-term elections to push for a responsive and inclusive healthcare system in the country.
We need a partner in the House of Representatives to come up with key legislation that will promote and protect the health and well-being of all Filipinos, Ong, an internist and a cardiologist, said during a press conference in Quezon City.
I have found that partner in Anakalusugan, party-list that truly represents us all rich and poor, young and old because health knows no political color nor economic class, Ong added.
Meanwhile, Anakalusugan party-list nominee Mike Defensor said Ong's advocacy is aligned with the party-list organization's own advocacy.
"His advocacy is aligned with our own in Anakalusugan that of pushing for affordable and accessible healthcare for all Filipinos, said Defensor, a former chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council and erstwhile secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Together, we will be a force to reckon with in Congress not just in passing necessary laws but also in serving as the Filipinos' watchdog to ensure that PhilHealth (Philippine Health Insurance Corporation) and the DOH (Department of Health) deliver the services expected of them, Defensor added.
Ong also vowed to push for the inclusion of maintenance medicines and laboratory test in the coverage of universal health care, noting that in 2013, the DOH spearheaded such provision of free maintenance medicines.
It also proposed to regularize the barangay health workers, who are appointed by the barangay chairperson and are only entitled to an allowance. (PNA)
