ZAMBOANGA CITY The Department of Health (DOH) has appointed a new chief of hospital at the government-run Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC).

Named as OIC chief of hospital was Dr. Soraya Abubakar, who is the chief of medical professional staff of the ZCMC.

Abubakar, who specializes in family medicine and a dermatologist, replaced Dr. Romeo Ong, who retired from government service.

Abubakar's appointment took effective February 15. It was signed by DOH Sec. Francisco Duque III.

I know the employees are all professional and they will give all the support that she needs, Ong said. He was appointed chief of hospital on December 1, 2003 and served the ZCMC for 14 years.

Ong said he is optimistic that the ZCMC will become a medical center of choice for the people since they have drafted a strategic development plant up to 2022.

Ong has spent 39 years in government service. He first served the ZCMC in 1979 and was transferred to Tawi-Tawi, Dapitan City, Ozamis City and Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte.

He also served as the head of the community hospital in Barangay Labuan, this city.

Ong, an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, has no other plans yet since he wanted to spend time with his family.
