QUEZON CITY-- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) holds 18th Gawad Kalasag National Awarding Ceremony at the Reception Hall, Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

Undersecretary for Civil, Veterans and Retiree Affairs Eduardo D Del Rosario, representing the NDRRMC Chairperson and Defense Secretary Delfin N Lorenzana, led the conferment of the 18th Gawad Kalasag Awards to 59 individuals and groups together with the Chairperson of the National GK Search Committee and DILG Officer-in-Charge USec Catalino S. Likewise, members of the National Council, GawadKalasag NSC and International Non-Government Organizations (INGOs) witnessed the awarding ceremonies.

Gawad KALASAG is the country's premier annual awards for outstanding contribution in the fields of DRRM and humanitarian assistance.

It is the principal mechanism by which the NDRRMC advances awareness of the best practices of DRRM and humanitarian response and action.

Moreover, it aims to appreciate individuals, groups or institutions which have shown extraordinary courage, heroism and sacrifice in times of emergencies, be it natural or human-induced.

Since its inception in 1998, the Gawad KALASAG award has been bestowed to 199 Local DRRM Councils, 66 National Government Organizations, 31 individuals and 211 groups/institutions.

Furthermore, about 30 winners have been conferred with a Hall of Fame Award. For the 18th Gawad Kalasag, nine Local DRRM Councils, two individuals, 13 groups/institutions and two hall of fame awardees were recognized for their outstanding contributions in DRRM and humanitarian assistance.

Gawad Kalasag awakens our resolution and vigor in leadership to prepare ahead so that when the danger is upon us, there shall be no fear, only courage. Our Gawad Kalasag awardees today are the proof that if there is a will there is a way. Their achievements merit emulation and further development, said Secretary Delfin N Lorenzana.
