The Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) has installed 27 brand new elevators in most stations to ensure convenient travel for its passengers.
Department of Transportation Sec. Arthur Tugade inspected the new elevators and rode the MRT-3 from Magallanes Station to North Avenue station today.
The new units are cable elevators with permanent magnet which does not need oil to operate unlike the old hydraulic elevators in MRT stations.
Five more elevators are to be installed at North Avenue Station (NB), Ortigas Station (SB), Buendia Station (Concourse) and Ayala Station (SB).
MRT-3 General Manager Deo Manalo said the new elevators would ease the commute of passengers during the Holidays.
Senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disability will be given priority.
"The elevators would relieve passengers from carrying heavy bags especially this Christmas," Manalo said.
The installation of new elevators is part of the efforts of the DOTr-MRT3 to further improve overall station experience and provide convenience to commuters.
This is also seen to reduce queues in stations especially during peak hours.
The completion of the installation of elevators is set on January 2017. Furthermore, repair and rehabilitation of escalators are ongoing and expected to be completed on February 2017.
MRT-3 also extended today the peak-hour operation in anticipation of Friday Christmas rush from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning, and from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the evening wherein 20 train sets will be deployed to the rail line.
The last train will depart from North Avenue station at 10 p.m. and from Taft station at 10:30 p.m
