LPA east of N. Luzon now TD ‘Domeng’

The low pressure area (LPA) east of northern Luzon has developed into a tropical depression (TD) and was named, "Domeng," the weather bureau announced Thursday afternoon.

In a bulletin sent at 5:14 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Domeng” was last tracked 930 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon.

The TD packs maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

“Domeng” and Tropical Storm Chaba (formerly Caloy) are enhancing the southwest monsoon, which will bring monsoon rains over the western section of central and southern Luzon in the next 24 hours.

The enhanced southwest monsoon will cause occasional gusty conditions reaching strong breezes to near gale in strength over extreme northern Luzon, the northern and western portions of Luzon, and the western portion of the Visayas.

These conditions are more likely in coastal and mountainous or upland localities, PAGASA said.

“Domeng” and the southwest monsoon will cause moderate to rough seas over the seaboards of northern Luzon, and the western seaboards of central and southern Luzon.

These conditions may be risky for small seacraft. PAGASA advised mariners to take precautionary measures when venturing to the sea. If possible, avoid navigating in these conditions.

Meanwhile, “Domeng” is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 24 hours.

It is also expected to remain far from the landmass, and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday.
