QUEZON CITY- Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Rafael 'Ka Paeng' Mariano reiterated his stand to fight for farmers' rights and welfare during the DAR's seminar and workshop on protecting women farmers against gender bias, inequality, and violence.
"Participation and contribution of women farmers are often not given importance. Just like the men, women farmers are just as dedicated and hardworking in providing for their family. And a lot of them are victims of violence in various forms," said Mariano.
"In celebration of women's month, let us honor and thank them for taking care of their families and for being partners in the country's food production," Mariano added.
Mariano was the keynote speaker on the ongoing seminar workshop whose participants are the department's Regional Women's Desk Officers and the Gender and Development Technical Working Group (GAD-TWG).
DAR GAD National Steering Committee chaired by DAR Undersecretary Rosalina Bistoyong said the seminar-workshop seeks to strengthen its Women's Desk Officers by orienting them on the salient features of the laws affecting women and children and to provide them skills on protecting and helping victims of violence against women and children.
Bistoyong said all regional and provincial officers of the DAR has a women's desk where rural women, women farmers, and children can go to for help and assistance if abuses were committed to them.
"The desk officers are our frontliners in helping abused women and children. The abuses and violence are varied for each victim. This seminar-workshop would teach them effective methods and approaches in dealing with these victims," explained Bistoyong.
The participants would be oriented and taught on the following: concepts and principles of gender sensitivity; important laws affecting women and children; and how to avail different support services and livelihood opportunities for rural women and women agrarian reform beneficiaries.
The seminar-workshop is being held at the Icon Hotel in Timog Avenue, Quezon City from March 8-10, 2017.
