Korean yields P2.2-B worth of chemicals ‘used’ to make shabu

MANILAPolice seized PHP2.2-billion worth of chemicals and equipment used in the manufacture of shabu inside a parked van owned by a Korean national in Pasig City on Wednesday.

Chief Supt. Bernabe Balba, EPD Director, said the discovery of the chemicals and equipment was preceded by surveillance operations following the arrest earlier of Korean national identified as Kim Jong Hee and his cohort Marvin Yu.

The operation started Wednesday morning that led to the arrest of Yu and confiscation of 250 grams of suspected shabu in Caloocan City.

Then, at about 6:30 p.m., a succeeding buy-bust operation was conducted in front of Viridian Hotel in San Juan City, which resulted in the arrest of Kim, who is believed to be a chemist, and the recovery of another 250 grams of suspected shabu.

After Kim's arrest, a surveillance operation was conducted to determine the source of the illegal items, resulting in the discovery of Kim's Toyota Hiace van (ZRF 504), inside J3N3 parking lot along Garnet Road barangay San Antonio, Ortigas Center, Pasig.

Recovered from Kim's vehicle were two containers and four water jugs of half-processed shabu, 26 sacks of suspected ephedrine, several glass mixers, gallons of chemicals believed to be precursors, several boxes of acetone, and other items used in making shabu.

The EPD said the chemicals can produce around 325 kilos, or PHP2.2 billion-worth of the illegal drugs.

The suspects are now under the custody of the police and facing violation of RA 9165, otherwise known as Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. (PNA)
