Kabayan town in Benguet maintains zero Covid-19 status

Kabayan, the only town in Benguet province that remains free from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) shares its “secret” to maintaining its status.

During the Laging Handa briefing on Thursday, Kabayan Mayor Faustino Aquisan said it is all about proper coordination among the agencies and offices concerned.

In his town, Aquisan said they successfully practiced self-discipline; effective and efficient incident management team; close coordination with partner agencies; respect to the implementation of executive orders, memoranda and guidelines; excellent communication and information handling; and timeliness in addressing issues and concerns.

Aquisan said as early as March 18 after President Rodrigo Duterte declared the enhanced community quarantine, the town organized its incident command post and municipal inter-agency task force that handled the situation.

Since March, a total of 35 executive orders in relation to Covid-19 were issued by his office.

“We have designated public information officers handling all communication concerns who ensures systematic flow of information. IEC in the communities were also done,” he said.

Kabayan, one of the 13 municipalities of Benguet is located adjacent to Region 2. It is where the century-old mummy, “Apo Anno”, rests in a cave.

It is a landlocked area of about 242 square kilometers with a 15,000 population mostly engaged in agriculture.

The famous Mount Pulag national park is largely located in the jurisdiction of this town.

Aquisan said opening the place for hikers would be discussed with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism.
