Just lunch, Chiz, Tomas say

SENATOR Francis “Chiz” Escudero met with Cebu City mayoral candidate Tomas Osmeña yesterday.

Escudero, who is running as an independent candidate for vice president, had lunch with the Osmeña family in their residence in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

Present during the lunch were Margot, wife of Tomas and a Cebu City councilor; his sister Minnie; his son Miguel; and his daughter-in-law Bea. Escudero’s campaign staff were also around.

To avoid speculations, Tomas clarified that yesterday’s gathering was not political.

“We’re very, very close friends, and if Leni (Robredo) was not running, I’ll be giving my 100 percent support to Chiz. That’s why I’m torn,” said Tomas.

Escudero is an independent candidate along with presidential aspirant Grace Poe, while Tomas is a member of the administration Liberal Party (LP).

Escudero supported Tomas’s statement, saying that the latter belongs to his circle of friends outside politics.

“You know we should have another life after politics. That’s how it should be,” Escudero said.

Escudero said Margot was his sponsor in his wedding to the actress Heart Evangelista.

Tomas, for his part, recalled how Escudero made an effort to let him feel that he is sincere about their friendship when the senator visited him while he was sick.

“When I was sick with cancer, Chiz went all the way to Houston to visit me and I will always appreciate people who will go out of their way,” he added.

Escudero arrived in Cebu yesterday to show his support for Poe, who will be joining today’s presidential debate at the University of Philippines-Cebu in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

Tomas said he is still backing the candidacy of Robredo despite his closeness with Escudero. He said he and Robredo belong to one party and the latter’s husband, the late Jessie Robredo, used to be his friend. Tomas also assured that he will campaign for all the LP candidates.

During yesterday’s lunch meeting, Cebuano dishes like lechon (roasted pig), hanging rice and Osmeña’s “tinunuan nga mangoes” and lumpia were served.

“Chiz can come here anytime and Mar and Leni, too. They can even sleep here, they’re welcome here,” said Tomas.
