Italian Nuns Launch Self-Defense Course for Women

Bibbiano: A convent of Italian nuns has initiated a self-defense course for women concerned about gender-based violence. The Maria Ausiliatrice Institute has collaborated with the local Uchi Oroshi Judo Sports Association to offer this month-long program.

According to Philippines News Agency, the course is supported by the Bibbiano town council and coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25. The nuns emphasized their commitment to social issues and the protection of vulnerable groups, stating their desire to demonstrate sensitivity towards women’s safety.

The program is held every Wednesday throughout November, focusing on self-defense techniques alongside lessons on body awareness, self-esteem, and crisis management. The nuns highlighted their goal to foster self-confidence and safety through movement and relationships, viewing these as preventive and developmental tools.

Sister Paola Della Ciana, the director of the institute and a psychotherapist with expertise in health and socio-emotional education, spearheads this initiative. The Maria Ausiliatrice Institute, established in 1920, serves 370 students and provides educational offerings ranging from nursery to middle school, including vocational and music programs.
