A massive manhunt is underway for eight detainees who escaped from Calbayog City jail in Samar on Monday afternoon.
The breakout involving inmates facing murder charges took place at the prison in Gadgaran village in Calbayog at around 2 p.m., the Philippine National Police (PNP) said in a report sent to reporters Monday night.
The police said the eight inmates attacked the two jail guards tasked to connect a water hose from the Calbayog water district tanker. The prisoners forcibly opened the gate after the attack.
“They rushed towards the gate and fled on foot going to the mountainous area of Gadgaran village,” the police reported.
The eight inmates were identified as Milo Ligason, Eron Tomboc, Edgar Elbano, Edar Balantino, Juvy Openiano, Edwin Abria, Eden Albana, and Raul Doroja. All of them are residents of Calbayog City.
Police were dispatched to search nearby areas and track down the inmates. Checkpoints were also set up along possible escape routes to search all vehicles.
