MANILAA retired army sergeant wanted for rape two years ago in Quezon City has been arrested in Isabela.
In a statement Tuesday, the Regional Special Operations Unit of the National Capital Region Police Office (RSOUNCRPO) reported the arrest of Alfonso Bungag, 44, a retired sergeant of the Philippine Army and a resident of Enrile, Cagayan.
On April 25, 2016, the victim formally filed a complaint against Bungag, who she claimed sexually abused her on April 10, 2016 when he was still in active service and assigned in Camp Aguinaldo.
Bungag was subsequently charged with rape on July 18, 2016, with no bail recommended before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 222. A warrant of arrest was issued by Judge Dalmacio Santos.
The suspect was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday following a tip from informants that he would be going back to Manila on board a Florida bus with plate number AKK 1952 from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
Upon receiving the information, RSOUNCRPO operatives proceeded to Barangay Magsaysay, Naguilian, Isabela and coordinated with the police there.
They conducted a checkpoint at Philmark in Magsaysay and arrested Bungag when the bus he was riding in arrived at the checkpoint. (PNA)
