MANILA -- The Department of Justice (DOJ) will start this month the preliminary investigation on policemen implicated in the death of Quezon City Deputy Prosecutor Rogelio Velasco.
Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Peter Ong told reporters the preliminary investigation will begin on January 28.
The respondents in the case had sought a transfer of the preliminary investigation to the DOJ instead of the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office where the victim was last assigned.
The National Bureau of Investigation's Death Investigation Division (NBI-DID) had filed the complaint against SPO2 Rodante Sicat Laimarmo, PO3 Arthur Yasonio Lucy, PO1 Jose Lunar Mercado, and eight other unidentified persons last September.
Velasco was driving his red Toyota Innova when he was gunned down on May 11, 2018 in front of the Abu Persian Kitchen along Don Antonio St. in Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City.
A white Toyota Innova, with plate number XNR 256, blocked the path of Velasco's vehicle and four armed men alighted and opened fire at the prosecutor's vehicle. He was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center where he expired.
Citing footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the Quezon City Memorial Circle, DID Investigation Agent Ariel Ross Calub said the suspects converged in the place as a staging area for the attack.
The suspects, he said, entered the Quezon City Memorial Circle using a white Innova and a black Toyota Fortuner.
Calub noted that the vehicles left the Quezon City Memorial Circle 20 minutes before proceeding with the attack. (PNA)
