MANILA The Department of Foreign Affairs is checking whether there were Filipinos among the casualties of the deadly tsunami that hit Indonesia Saturday night.
"The DFA is monitoring the situation as the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is checking if there are members of the Filipino community affected by the incident," said the agency in a statement sent by DFA Executive Director Charmaine Aviquivil to the media.
As of 2 p.m. Sunday, more than 60 people were reported to have perished in the incident.
Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, on the other hand, said 600 people more were injured, 420 houses and nine hotels were heavily damaged by the tsunami reportedly triggered by an underwater landslide due to the eruption of Krakatoa volcano. (PNA)
