MANILA -- Around 17,000 public servants on Sunday joined the Philippine Civil Service Commission (CSC) R.A.C.E. to Serve Fun Run at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.
The fun run, composed of 3K, 5K and 10K races, is the official kick-off activity for the month-long celebration of CSC's 119th anniversary in September.
It aims to raise funds for the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani, a program that provides one-time financial assistance and scholarship opportunities for the loved ones left behind by government workers who died in the line of duty.
In an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA), CSC chair Alicia dela Rosa-Bala said the commission chooses to start its anniversary month with a physical activity like the fun run to promote healthy lifestyle among public servants.
"Gusto naming ma-reenergize ang mga naglilingkod sa publiko at mabigyan sila ng pagkakataon na makisalamuha sa kapwa nilang lingkod bayani. Sabi nila, halos wala na silang panahon dahil sa trabaho kaya ito ay isang venue para diyan (we want those who serve the public to be reenergized and to give them the opportunity to mingle with their fellow public servants. They say, they don't have the time [to socialize] because they have a lot of work and this is one venue for that), Bala said.
Citing the anniversary theme, Civil Service at 119: Upholding Integrity and Building a High Trust Society, Bala said the commission seeks to ensure a people-centered, efficient, and effective governance this year.
"Layunin naming itaas ang antas ng serbisyo publiko, at mapapa-igting ang tunay na pagsisilbi sa taong bayan. Binigyang diin ng ating Pangulong (Rodrigo) Duterte na ayaw niyang magreklamo ang mga tao dahil mahaba ang pila at hindi sila inaasikaso (We seek to elevate the level of our public service and to strengthen true service to the people. Our President Duterte has stressed that he doesn't want the people to complain about long lines and being unattended) so this is our contribution to the government, in everything we do. We must always think about the benefit of the people," she added.
The fun run started with a Zumba session and other pre-run activities. The 10K race category started at 5 a.m., the 5K category at 5:10 a.m. and the 3K category at 5:25 a.m. (PNA)
