Couple yields P2.1-M ‘smuggled’ cigarettes in Zambo Sur

A couple was arrested with some PHP2.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in an anti-smuggling operation in Zamboanga del Sur’s town of Labangan, a police official said Monday.

Col. Richard Verceles, operations chief of the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao, said couple Alvin Pranza, 25, and Adelyn, 21, were arrested around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Barangay Sang-an, Labangan.

Verceles said a team of policemen and Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel launched the operation after they received a report that boxes of cigarettes were being unloaded in the village.

Verceles said the couple failed to present legal documents, which prompted the team to arrest them and seize some 60 master cases of cigarettes.

He said the couple will be charged for violation of BOC laws, the Tax Reform Act of 1997, and other related laws.
