Comelec to share best election debate practices in international symposium

Commission on Elections Spokesperson James Jimenez will be attending the U.S. presidential debate and international debate symposium at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from October 16 to 20, 2016.

Organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the event is part of their ongoing efforts to support debate sponsoring groups worldwide.

Jimenez will be part of a select group who will view the live presidential debate at UNLV on October 19 and a global debate best practices symposium. Participants will be able to share their country's debate experience in forums organized by UNLV.

"We will share how we were able to maximize social media for the Pilipinas Debates 2016," Jimenez said.

The Commission gained international recognition for its innovative use of social media during the 2016 Presidential debates. It partnered with Facebook, Twitter, and different news organizations in 2015 to monitor political discussions and trends throughout the election period. Facebook and Twitter also assisted the Commission with crowdsourcing questions ahead of the presidential and vice-presidential debates.

"The goal is for the holding of candidate debates to be institutionalized so we hope to learn as much as we can from the conduct of the U.S. Presidential debates and the experience of debate groups around the world," Jimenez added.
