MANILA-- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday warned the public to be on the lookout for unscrupulous individuals or groups who are soliciting donations supposedly for the benefit of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and families of security forces killed-in-action during the rebellion in Marawi City.
At the Mindanao Hour press briefing in MalacaAang, AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr. noted that "there has been an observable increase in scammers trying to raise money for our soldiers by way of benefit dinners, lunches or whatever."
"Please do not believe them until you have verified because there's only one legitimate account that receives donations for soldiers and (another) for the affected civilians of Marawi," he said.
"So just as a warning to the public, we would like to ask everybody to be on the lookout for these scammers and let your telcos know of the numbers they're using so that they can be blocked and cannot go on with their nefarious activities," Padilla said.
On Monday, the government announced two special bank accounts that can be used for Marawi donations.
Members of the public who wanted to donate to the families of the soldiers slain in Marawi can do so through a Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) account with account name "AFP Marawi Casualty" and account number 00000552107128.
For those who want to give donations for IDPs from Marawi City, they can deposit their donation to LBP account Marawi IDP with account number 00000552107136.
For transparency, the AFP will be posting the amount of donations and disbursements.
Donors may call or text LCDR Rose Abud, who is tasked to maintain the records of donations and disbursements, at mobile number +63 928 264 3337 to inform the AFP of such deposits made, the branch, the date, time, and amount.
Meanwhile, Presidential Ernesto Abella likewise called on the public not to give donations other than the LBP special accounts.
"Please be reminded that these are the only official depository accounts and please do not give especially financial donations to any other supposed solicitations. Please take note that the only depository bank is Land Bank of the Philippines," the Palace official said in the same briefing.
Abella said that as of Tuesday, the total amount deposited for the families of soldiers killed-in-action has already reached PHP508,500 while PHP187,500 has been deposited for the evacuees.
