MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo de Manila University's bid for a third consecutive UAAP women's volleyball championship suffered a blow after it was confirmed that Maddie Madayag had torn her ACL in her right knee and is likely out for the rest of the Season 78 tournament.
Ateneo team manager Tony Boy Liao confirmed to ABS-CBN News that Madayag suffered the knee injury after their training, when the Lady Eagles were doing spiking drills.
Liao said Madayag will have surgery after the Holy Week and recovery is expected to take at least three months.
Madayag has become one of the rising stars for the two-time defending champion Lady Eagles, showing tremendous improvement from Season 77 wherein she was used sparingly.
At the end of the first round, Madayag was leading the UAAP in serving while also ranking in the top 10 in blocking.
The Lady Eagles currently sit at the top of the UAAP standings with an 8-2 win-loss record.
