The National Power Corp. (Napocor) announced Monday it will release water from the Angat Dam on Tuesday (Dec. 20) to maintain its stability and draw the reservoir elevation to safe levels.
The dam will open its spillway gate initially at 0.5 meter at 8 a.m. and will discharge water at about 68 cubic meters per second. Angat Dam's water level has risen to 213.90 meters above sea level (masl) following continuous rains brought by the prevailing northeast monsoon affecting Northern and Central Luzon. Its normal high water level is 212 masl.
Napocor's flood operation manager, Teresa Serra, assured that the release of water will not cause flooding downstream.
"It will have minimal effect on Matictic River in Norzagaray and no effect at all in other rivers," Serra said.
Napocor said it has already advised and will continue to advise people near the dam to be alert and take the necessary precautions. It said it has likewise notified local government units.
