MANILA Senator Sonny Angara is seeking a congressional probe into recent allegations of fraudulent medical claims involving the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).
According to a statement on Wednesday, Angara filed Senate Resolution No. 3 which seeks to institute policies to combat such frauds and to review the utilization of the corporation's funds, especially before the Universal Health Care Act is implemented in full.
Funds that are intended for the poor and for those who are in actual need of medical assistance should be protected, Angara said.
Angara cited recent reports of how a dialysis center was making fraudulent claims from PhilHealth for patients suffering from kidney disease.
We want to get to the bottom of all these reported scams, identify the personalities behind them, and come up with policies to prevent similar cases from taking place in the future, Angara said.
News reports said the PhilHealth has lost a total of PHP154 billion since 2013 due to these scams, the latest of which involved the "ghost" dialysis treatments. (PNA)
