NABUNTURAN, Compostela Valley(PNA) -- Floods that swept through various villages in the three provinces of Davao Region this week due to the tail-end of a cold front that continues to affect most parts of the eastern section of Mindanao already destroyed around PHP57.6 million worth of crops, the Department of Agriculture in the region (DA 11) reported.
In an assessment in time with the visit of Agriculture Secretary Manny PiAol on Thursday here, DA-Disaster Risk Reduction Management focal person Joedel Leliza said they are is still in the process of validating the extent of the damage of floods to agriculture in the region as reports from provinces continue to reach their office.
As of January 26, Leliza said damage to agriculture in Davao del Norte already reached PHP28.83 million; Compostela Valley with PHP23.17 million; and Davao Oriental with PHP5.6 million.
He added that 15,169 individuals or 3,272 families were directly affected by the flooding in the region.
A total of 4,831 farmers were directly hit by the recent flooding with 1,384 hectares considered as totally damaged and 1,522.73 hectares as partially damaged.
The most affected commodity in agriculture sector, Leliza said, are rice, corn and vegetables.
"These flooding should not be looked up in the context as a disaster. It's a problem that comes back again and again and needs long-term interventions," PiAol told the provincial officials who joined the meeting here on Thursday.
Present during the meeting were Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy, Daval del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario and Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang.
Top officials of DA 11 led by OIC-regional director Ricardo OAate also joined the meeting.
PiAol also assured the local officials of the support of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte to the affected farmers.
"We need to look into this problem from a deeper perspective. If we don't address this now, this problem would always come back like a nightmare," the secretary added.
He also listened to the issues and concerns raised by farmer leaders and local officials during the meeting.
Local officials in the region also came up with a PHP69.2-million proposal for DA to fund various farm rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.
Of the total amount requested, PHP39.39 million will be allocated to Davao del Norte; PHP21.87 million to Compostela Valley; and PHP7.96 million to Davao Oriental.
As indicated in the proposal, the amount will be utilized to provide the affected farmers with rice, corn and assorted vegetable seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, biologics, fingerlings and feeds.
"DA will give all the needed interventions to address these flooding problems," PiAol assured. (PNA)
