Magnitude 5.3 quake hits Davao Oriental

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Davao Oriental on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. The tectonic quake struck 98 kilometers southeast of the municipality of Manay at 2:23 p.m. It had a depth of 19 kms. Phivolcs has not logged any reported intensities in the earthquake bulletin issued at 3:20 p.m. Aftershocks are likely, while damages are not expected from the magnitude 5.3 quake. 36.7K more recover from coronavirus, 29.8K new cases: DOH

The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday reported 36,763 recoveries and 29,828 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections. The latest Covid-19 bulletin indicated 273,580 active cases while total recoveries rose to 3,090,164, or 90.4 percent of 3,417,216 infections since the pandemic started in March 2020. Out of the active cases, 260,399 are mild, 3,006 are moderate, 8,371 are asymptomatic, 1,496 are severe, and 308 are critical. “Of the 29,828 reported cases today, 29,237 (98 percent) occurred within the recent 14 days — Jan. 10 to Jan. 23, 2022,” the DOH reported. S. Korea culls chickens over outbreaks of H5N1 bird flu

South Korean quarantine officials began slaughtering about 427,000 chickens Sunday as a precautionary measure after the outbreaks of the H5N1 avian influenza virus at two farms, the agricultural ministry said. The two cases of the highly pathogenic bird flu were reported at two chicken farms in Hwaseong, about 40 kilometers south of Seoul, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said.
