MANILA Nineteen individuals, including two South Korean nationals, were arrested for illegal quarrying in Pampanga province.
The suspects were presented to media at the National Bureau of Investigation on Monday.
The NBI Environmental Crime Division (EnCD) said the individuals arrested in separate operations on February 7 were involved in quarrying operations at Barangay Dolores in Bacolor and Barangay Calsadang Bayu and Manibaug Pasig in Porac.
Two firms, Sammi Vibro and the BM Marimla Plant, were conducting extraction of lahar-based minerals in the area near the Mega Dikes River without valid sand and gravel permits from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the NBI said.
Arrested in Barangay Dolores were Korean nationals Gi Man Lee and Jeong Sunmi , operators of Sammi Vibro.
Also arrested were John Paul Sumat, Jory Sabacan, Alberto Lingad, Joseph De Leon, Sandy Vosotros, Alex Basilio, Fernando Tomas, Tyron Manalo, Mark Glen Reyes, Rudy Libunao, Joey Madrona, Marcelino Bundoc and Lamix Abogan.
In the operation in Barangay Calsadang Bayu, arrested were Alfer Nueva, Rodolfo Pineda, Higinio Javate and Ener dela Cruz all workers of Marimla Plant.
All 19 were presented for inquest proceedings before the Department of Justice Task Force Environmental Laws for violation of Sec. 103 (Theft of Minerals) under RA 7942 otherwise known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995. (PNA)
