Undefeated Pinoy to challenge UK champion for IBF crown

DAVAO CITY – Undefeated Jayson “Smasher” Mama of General Santos City will challenge reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) world flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards of the United Kingdom at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Hackney Wick, London, UK on September 11.

“After how many years in my pro boxing career, this is it,” said the 24-year-old Mama in a Facebook message.

Mama is undefeated in 16 fights with nine wins via stoppage.

Under the watchful eyes of trainer Ronerex Dalut, Mama is presently sparring four times daily with four rounds each against former World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific super flyweight champion Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar, undefeated super flyweight RV Deniega, and newly-crowned World Boxing Association Asia South flyweight champion Dave “Dobermann” Apolinar.

“I’m very happy,” said Mama, who recently retired Romshane Sarquilla of Cotabato in the 8th round at Sanman Gym in General Santos City last April 30.

He promised to do everything to bring home the IBF crown.

Mama’s manager, JC Manangquil, of Sanman Promotions said Edwards is a great champion “but Jayson will do everything to be a world champion”.

Mama has been training at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City.

“He was already training in the gym one month before we signed the contract,” Manangquil said, adding Mama is in great shape.

Edwards, 25, is also undefeated in 16 fights with four knockouts.

Last April 30, Edwards pulled out a unanimous victory against Moruti Mthalane of South Africa at the York Hall, Bethnal Green in UK to win the IBF title.

The bubble boxing event is promoted by Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions. (PNA)
