Striegl fights again after 2020 loss, injury

Mixed martial arts (MMA) star Mark Striegl will make his way back to the octagon when he takes on American veteran Chas Skelly at “UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Fiziev” on February 20 (Philippine Time) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Striegl will be fighting for the first time since his UFC debut loss to Russia’s Said Nurmagomedov in October 2020.

Striegl and URCC featherweight champion Skelly both tote an 18-3 win-loss record.

Fourteen of Striegl’s victories were by submission.

“I am super excited about this fight,” Striegl said in an online interview on Thursday.

The 33-year-old Striegl was supposed to fight last year but an injury sustained during training camp got in the way.

He has remained injury-free since then and has never contracted Covid-19 while on training in Peoria, Arizona alongside renowned MMA coach George Castro.

“It’s definitely good to not have to worry and think about that,” said Striegl, born to an American-German father and Filipino mother. “It feels great to be healthy now, knock on wood.”

He said protocols are more relaxed in the United States and he can move around freely.

Striegl will also look to rebuild a winning streak after his four-game run was snapped by Nurmagomedov, who knocked him out in just 51 seconds at at UFC Fight Island 6 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The main bout will be between Brazilian-American Rafael dos Anjos, a former UFC lightweight champion, and Kyrgyzstani Rafael Fiziev.
