Red tide still up in 2 Surigao Sur bays

BUTUAN CITY – Red tide toxins continue to affect the coastal waters of Lianga town and Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.

In Shellfish Bulletin No. 18 Series of 2021 released on Thursday, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said that shellfishes collected in these areas are still positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP).

“The content of the toxic red tide collected in shellfishes in Lianga and Bislig Bays, based on laboratory results, is beyond the regulatory limit,” the bulletin said.

The same findings are also reported in the coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol; Tambobo Bay, Siaton in Negros Oriental; coastal waters of Daram Island, Cambatutay, and Irong-irong Bays in Western Samar; coastal waters of Calubian, and Cancabato Bay, Tacloban City in Leyte; Murcielagos Bay in Zamboanga del Norte; and Balite Bay, Mati City in Davao Oriental.

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are not safe for human consumption,” it added.

It also said fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and the internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
