Monsoon rains leave P28.2-M agri, infra losses in Ilocos Norte

Some PHP28.2 million losses in infrastructure and agriculture brought about by the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) were recorded on Thursday in Ilocos Norte

In a report, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) head Marcell Tabije said damage to infrastructure was at PHP26,200,000 and at least PHP2,076,934 to agriculture.

“As of the moment, the estimated figure may still likely to increase,” Tabije said.

On Thursday, a huge acacia tree was toppled by strong winds along the national highway in Barangay Suyo, Dingras, Ilocos Norte, which stranded several motorists in the area.

It took more than four hours for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Barangay and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council personnel to clear the highway.

In Pasuquin town, at least five families were rescued from their homes in Barangay Susugaen after they were trapped in floodwaters.

DPWH heavy equipment in the first district of Ilocos Norte is also on standby along the Manila North Road in Sitio Bangquero, Barangay Pancian, Pagudpud due to the recurrence of landslides caused by prolonged rains.

The PDRRMC said only one lane is passable on Pancian Road as of this posting.
