The provincial government of La Union has placed this capital city under general community quarantine (GCQ) from September 8 to 22 to curb the surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases here.
In Executive Order No. 41 issued Tuesday late afternoon, Governor Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III said Mayor Hermenegildo Gualberto has requested for the reclassifying of the city’s quarantine status from modified general community quarantine (GCQ) to the regular GCQ.
“To arrest the further spread of Covid-19 in the city, and to benefit its surrounding municipalities as well as the province in general, there is a need to approve the request to declare heightened community quarantine in the city,” he said.
As of Tuesday, San Fernando City has a total of 3,303 Covid-19 cases, with 2,876 recoveries, 334 active cases, and 93 deaths.
In the EO, Ortega directed the local chief executive and the local Philippine National Police to ensure compliance with the Operational Guidelines on the Application of the Zoning Containment Strategy in the Localization of the National Action Plan against Covid-19 Response and other applicable guidelines during the GCQ.
These include the stringent limitations on the movement and transportation of people, the establishment of checkpoints, the observance of the minimum health protocols, the closing of non-essential establishments, and strict regulation of operating industries, curfews, and heightened presence of uniformed personnel to enforce protocols.
The city government of San Fernando has yet to issue specific guidelines for the new quarantine status.
