Hands off politics, senator advises cops

Senator Ronald dela Rosa on Monday advised the police force not to engage in partisan politics and uphold the standards of integrity and accountability.

In an interview during the 31st foundation day of the Philippine National Police (PNP) at the Camp Crame headquarters in Quezon City, dela Rosa said cops should not allow themselves to be exploited by politicians.

“Paalala ko lang sa inyo huwag na huwag kayong magpagamit sa isang pulitiko. Kahit ako ay isang pulitiko, huwag na huwag kayong magpagamit talaga dahil aside from being illegal and immoral ay ‘pag kayo ay gumawa ng something na para mapaboran ang isang pulitiko in consideration of money, parang binenta mo na ang kinabukasan ng isang probinsya, bayan o siyudad (I would like to remind policemen not to be used by politicians. Aside from it being illegal and immoral, when you do something for a politician because of money, it is like selling the future of a province, town or city,” he said.

In his speech, dela Rosa lauded the expanded role the PNP had assumed during the current health crisis.

“Throughout the years, we have seen how the PNP marches on to greater heights of honor and glory through its remarkable accomplishments and continuing internal reformation, and even exultantly hurdle vast challenges and difficulties especially during this pandemic,” he said.

As a former PNP chief, dela Rosa said he witnessed how the police work and contribute beyond their duties.

PNP chief, Gen. Dionardo Carlos, likewise lauded the 225,000-strong police force for “staying true and living up to the standards of professionalism, accountability, integrity, and commitment in the realm of law enforcement and public service”.

“We continuously delivered effective police operations and investigation amidst the pandemic. This outlook is made more tangible as we increase police presence by maximizing the deployment of personnel for preventive patrol and PCR (police community relations) operations where services are much needed. Through such actions, we have strengthened our campaign against illegal drugs, crime, terrorism, and corruption while also fighting the unseen enemy in this health crisis,” he said in a statement posted on PNP’s Facebook page.
