DSWD sends 10K food packs to Siargao, Dinagat Islands

The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Caraga (DSWD-13) has already sent 10,000 family food packs (FFPs) to the Province of Dinagat Islands and Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte.

In a statement Monday, the DSWD-13 said 5,000 of the total FFPs were sent to Dinagat Islands while the other 5,000 to Siargao Island.

The two areas, including Surigao City, are considered most devastated by Typhoon Odette that wreaked havoc in the Caraga Region last week.

“The FFPs are initial augmentations for the local government units of Siargao and Dinagat,” the DSWD-13 said.

It added that their personnel have been braving transportation challenges in going to and from the said islands and finally managed to deliver the FFPs on Monday.

The delivery of the food support is in coordination with the Philippine Navy and a private shipping company.

“The FFPs for Siargao Island were transported through the Philippine Navy while those for the Dinagat Islands were shipped through the Montenegro Shipping. Packing of the additional goods is continuously done as of Monday,” the DSWD-13 said.

The agency also announced the incoming 48,000 FFPs from other DSWD regional offices and from the National Resource Logistics Management Bureau (NRLMB) of the agency.

The 48,000 incoming FFPs will be coming from DSWD Zamboanga (7,000), DSWD Davao (8,000), DSWD SOCCSKSARGEN (8,000), and NRLMB (25,000).

The agency added that it is also working with the other municipalities in the other provinces in the region for the augmentation of their FFPs.

“DSWD will continue to provide augmentation support to the affected LGUs in the Region, and teams have been prepared to be augmented in the relief operations in the islands of Siargao and Dinagat Islands,” the DSWD-13 said.

Based on the data released by the DSWD-13 on December 18, a total of 58,309 families or 217,080 individuals have been directly affected by typhoon Odette in Caraga Region.

The affected families came from 436 barangays, 52 municipalities, and four cities in the region, the data said.
