2 cops feted for helping woman give birth in vehicle

The Police Regional Office in the Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) has awarded commendation medals to two policemen who assisted a woman in giving birth to a baby girl aboard a vehicle in this city.

The recipients of the “Medalya ng Papuri” were Staff Sergeant Freddie Boy Erra and Patrolman Ashraf Macasalong, both of the city police traffic management unit.

Col. Lou Frias Evangelista, police deputy regional director for operations, led the awarding of medals to the two policemen during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at Camp Col. Romeo Abendan, the PRO-9 headquarters in Barangay Mercedes here.

On November 11, Erra and his buddy were on the way to their post around 6:30 a.m. when the former noticed a vehicle of Barangay Cabatangan on standby on the side of the road along Nuñez Extension in Barangay Camino Nuevo.

Upon verification, Erra and his companion saw a woman who was about to give birth and immediately called for an ambulance.

While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Erra, took the courage to assist the woman, upon hearing the mother saying that the baby’s head was already crowning.

Despite having no medical background, Erra managed to assist in the safe delivery of a healthy baby girl inside the vehicle.

“I am happy that we were able to help the mother in giving birth to a baby girl,” Erra said.

After the successful delivery, the mother and the newborn were transported to the hospital for further medical attention.
